• No rain respite for Kol now: Met

  • Kolkata: Despite the maximum temperature being on the normal mark, the city continued to reel under high discomfort due to high humidity. The Met office has also revised its thunderstorm alert for the city — which was expected by the weekend — and Kolkata is unlikely to get any rain respite for now. The maximum temperature on Tuesday rose slightly from 33.8°C to 34.6°C while the minimum temperature went down marginally from 27.2°C to 26.6°C.

On Monday, the Met office had predicted thundershower activities in Kolkata along with some other parts of south Bengal by the weekend. This forecast remains for districts, including South 24 Parganas.

"Rain relief is unlikely for Kolkata at present. The heat and humid conditions are likely to remain unchanged. But we are expecting a few spells of thundershowers in other districts in the next two to three days," said a Met official.

At present, the city is getting a good amount of moisture at the ground level, brought in by the southerly wind system from the Bay of Bengal. Met officials said this moisture content has to rise to the upper level to facilitate the formation of thunderclouds. The high humidity at the ground level can only add to the discomfort factor, pushing up the real-feel temperature.

Even though the temperature is unlikely to see any significant variation in the next few days, the high humidity will continue to make the weather uncomfortable.
