Kolkata: The city cops have arrested two persons from Murshidabad for being part of an organized gang that duped students by promising admission to top medical colleges in India. The arrests were carried out after a two-year probe, the FIR being drawn up in Aug 2023 at Maniktala PS.
The arrested individuals, Prasun Basu and Prashant Pratap Singh, were produced in the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (II) Court Calcutta and remanded in police custody until April 11, 2025. They have been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating, and forgery.
According to cops, the accused and their accomplices forged documents to facilitate their fraudulent operations. The gang primarily targeted medical aspirants with lower NEET rankings.
The probe revealed the gang operated through an education consultancy firm on Park Street. Cops estimate about 12 medical aspirants may have fallen victim to this scheme.
A parallel investigation by the south division police is underway into a racket involving fake overseas medical college admissions. —Dwaipayan Ghosh
