  • 123 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers Eastern India to refrain from interfering with Bidula Bhattacharjee and 14 other directors' right to profession and ruled that the non-production of a "unique card" would not affect their right to function as directors.

The directors were asked to approach the state directly. "The state respondent will consider and not ask them to approach the federation," Justice Amrita Sinha directed. The advocate for the directors stated that there is a film directorate headed by an additional secretary and executive officer, director of films.

Director Bidula Bhattacharjee approached the court, accusing the federation of interfering with her fundamental rights. The judge directed the federation to refrain from interfering with her rights and instructed Bhattacharjee to make a representation before the information and cultural affairs secretary within a week. She directed the department to hear all representations and pass an order thereafter within four weeks.
