A 24-year-old IT employee, Rajani Mahato, was killed by a bus while crossing a road in Salt Lake's Sector V after disembarking from another bus. KOLKATA: A 22-year-old woman, employed at the Salt Lake IT hub, was run over by a bus shortly after she disembarked from another bus at the Webel crossing in Sector V on Saturday morning.
Rajani Mahato, 24, a resident of Tangra who works in IT firm mPockket Financial Service Pvt Ltd loacted at the Globsyn building, had boarded a bus on the Santragachi-New Town-Barasat route from Park Circus connector.
When the bus reached Webel crossing around 10.15 am, she alighted from the bus along with other passengers. Since the traffic signal was red, she attempted to cross the road in front of the bus. Just then, the signal turned green.
Though she crossed the bus from which she had alighted, Rajani came right before another bus of the same route that was accelerating in a bid to overtake the other bus.
Eyewitnesses said the front wheel of the bus crushed her head and she died on the spot. Police transported the body to Bidhannagar Sub divisional Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Rajani had been employed with the company since 2022.
Though police advise pedestrians to always cross the road cautiously and do so at the pedestrian crossing, locals said buses on the Santragachi-New Town-Barasat were notorious for rash driving.
A couple of weeks ago, another bus of the same route had braked hard to pick up a passenger near Sukantanagar on Jessore Road that led to the truck that was behind it to ram into its rear.
Two persons, one alighting from the bus and another waiting to board, had died in the accident.
Police officers said they have been implementing various measures including developing awareness of bus drivers and pedestrians about blind spots and the need to drive cautiously at busy intersections.
