12 Kolkata: The organs of a 15-year-old girl from Khardah gifted life to three end-stage organ failure patients. The heart and two kidneys of the girl were transplanted into three patients on Saturday.
On March 28, the teenager was rushed to CMRI Hospital from another private nursing home with acute obstructive hydrocephalus due to 4th ventricular brain tumour. On noticing signs of brain stem cell death, doctors declared her brain dead on Friday.
" Her family consented to donate her organs, giving the gift of life to others in need. CMRI Hospital honoured the young girl with a guard of honour, recognising her as a beacon of hope and the greatest gift to mankind," said Sombrata Roy, unit head, CK Birla Hospitals CMRI.
ROTTO (east) allocated the heart to Medica Superspecialty Hospital, one kidney to Command Hospital and the second kidney to a recipient at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur. Sources said that while the donor lung was not fit for transplant, the liver was good enough, but a matching recipient was not found.
Retrieval of organs started on Saturday afternoon. All the organs were transported via green corridors. This is the third deceased organ donation in Bengal this year.
