123456 Kolkata: A 24-year-old woman, working at the Salt Lake IT hub, was run over by a bus after she alighted from another bus at the Webel crossing in Sector V on Saturday morning.
Rajani Mahato, a resident of Tangra, worked at the IT firm, mPokket Financial Service Pvt Ltd, which has an office in the Globsyn building. On Saturday, she had boarded a bus on the Santragachhi-New Town-Barasat route from the Park Circus connector. When the bus reached the Webel crossing around 10.15 am, she alighted. As she got off, she found the traffic signal light still red and made to cross the road. Before Rajani could walk to safety, the signal light turned green and she came in front of another bus of the same route, which had started to accelerate to overtake the other bus.
Witnesses claimed the front wheel of the bus crushed her head. Police took the body to Bidhannagar Subdivisional Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The bus driver was arrested.
Rajani had been working with the company since 2022.
While police reiterated their advise of always crossing roads at zebra crossings, people in the Sector V area pointed out that buses on the Santragachhi-New Town-Barasat route were notorious for rash driving. A couple of weeks ago, another bus of the same route had braked hard to pick up a passenger near Sukantanagar on Jessore Road, leading to a truck behind it ramming into its rear. Two persons, one alighting from the bus and another waiting to board, died in the accident.
Police said they had been taking various steps, including spreading awareness about blind spots and the need to drive cautiously.
