  • Kolkata: A senior citizen, riding a scooterette, was crushed under the wheels of a private bus on Strand Road, between Fairlie Place and Clive Row, around 11.30 am on Saturday.

Police said Musafir Raja (61), a resident of Shibpur in Howrah, was trying to overtake the bus from the left when he fell. The ISI-marked helmet that Raja was wearing was severely damaged as the bus's left wheels ran him over, said cops.

"We found in the CCTV footage that Raja took the extreme left to overtake buses headed towards Howrah bridge. He overtook three buses before he tried overtaking the fourth one, running on Route 37A (Sulekha More-Howrah Station). But his two-wheeler's front wheel skidded on a gully pit and he fell under the bus's rear wheels," said an officer.

Raja was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he was declared dead. The bus driver has been detained. "The bus driver had no way of knowing a two-wheeler was trying to overtake," said a HQ Traffic Guard officer.
