  • Howrah: The citizens of Howrah, encompassing both Hindu and Muslim communities, are optimistic about peaceful Ram Navami celebrations on Sunday. Various residents who spoke to TOI expressed confidence in the substantial police presence. Urban Howrah will see approximately 7,000 police personnel deployed to oversee six major rallies.

    Howrah Police commissioner Praveen Tripathi told TOI: "The entire procession on GT Road and Foreshore Road will be monitored with drone cameras, CCTV cameras, and strict rooftop surveillance. RAF and combat forces are ready, and plainclothes intelligence police have already started monitoring. We are prepared to maintain peace. Adequate police protection will also be present at other processions."

    The sensitive Anjaniputra Sena route will be under surveillance using 10 drone cameras and 15 CCTV cameras. Police escorts will accompany the procession with clear directives regarding disturbances. Additional city surveillance includes 30 drone cameras and 35 CCTV cameras for other processions.

    Police have been conducting patrols in areas that have a history of disturbances. Officers have visited neighbourhoods to reassure residents about maintaining peace.

    Despite assurances, certain residents remain concerned. Sher Zaman from Chara Basti, Shibpur, plans to stay home on Sunday. Abdul Jabbar, a fruit vendor at Fazir Bazaar on GT Road, said: "Sunday is my busiest business day, but this Sunday, there will be a procession from morning till evening. Two years ago, my stall was attacked, and I suffered a significant loss. So, this Sunday, I will not open my shop."

    Arvind Pal, a confectionery shop owner, has decided to keep his shop shut. Panchsheel Apartments on GT Road, which was in the eye of violence in 2023 Ram Navami, has sought enhanced protection. Resident Anju Mittal expressed concerns about security based on previous experiences. Vivek Vihar complex residents Kamal Baid and Pankaj Jain recounted attacks in the past and requested increased police presence to provide adequate protection.

    On Saturday, local MLA and minister Arup Roy led a harmony procession displaying ‘Hindu-Muslim Bhai Bhai' placards, offering reassurance. Former BJP district president Ambuj Sharma confirmed compliance with court orders regarding procession conduct.

    Police officials have confirmed comprehensive surveillance measures for all processions. The police commissioner expressed confidence in the arrangements for maintaining peace and order throughout the celebrations.
