• KMDA to carbon-wrap fire-hit girders of Durgapur ROB

  • 12 Kolkata: KMDA will undertake the carbon-wrapping of the girders of the Durgapur ROB, which was damaged in a fire that broke out in a slum below it in Dec last year.

Heavy goods vehicles are now barred from taking the bridge as multiple spans on the underbelly of the structure are affected. Officials said the temperature below the bridge rose in the fire and as the moisture content of the concrete span reduced, the surface turned brittle. As part of repairs, grouting and other methods were taken up. "A consultant, engaged for the structural health study of the bridge, recommended carbonisation or carbon wrapping of the fire-affected girders to strengthen the bridge and prevent corrosion," said an official.

Structural engineers said the work entailed putting layers of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer on the girders' concrete structure. KMDA officials said they had started the process of engaging an agency. The work will cost around Rs 77.6 lakh.
