12 Kolkata: A man from Bagdah in North 24 Parganas hacked his wife to death with an axe on Sunday after seeing her speaking to someone on a video call, suspecting an extramarital affair. He then called the police to confess to the crime before attempting suicide.
Police later rescued the accused, Prasenjit Biswas (32), from his residence at Bagdah's Kolagram and arrested him for killing his wife Arpita (28).
According to local sources, Arpita married Prasenjit around seven years ago. The couple have a five-year-old daughter.
"He suspected that his wife was involved in an extramarital affair. The situation escalated after Arpita refused to stop making reels on social media despite her husband's repeated warnings," said Kakoli Ghosh, a neighbour.
On Sunday morning, Prasenjit saw her talking to someone on a video call. "In a fit of rage, he picked up an axe and attacked her. Arpita died on the spot. Prasenjit then called the police and confessed to killing his wife. He attempted suicide by hanging himself, but police rescued him," a family member of Arpita said.
"A murder case has been registered. The woman's body was recovered and sent for postmortem. A blood-stained axe was seized from the kitchen," a senior police officer of Bongaon police district said.
