  • Kolkata: A department store at a south Kolkata mall clocked nearly Rs 200 crore in revenue in 2024-25, the highest grosser among all mall-based department stores in the country. Another store of the same brand at a mall in Salt Lake recorded the second-highest revenue per square foot among all its outlets in India.

Sources told TOI the Shoppers Stop store at South City Mall created history by clocking sales that were just Rs 14 lakh short of the Rs 200-crore mark. This is the highest turnover of a department store in this segment across the country. Other players in the segment include Pantaloons, Lifestyle and Central.

The turnover of the store in South City Mall, which is spread across 66,000 square feet, is all the more remarkable because footfall was flat last fiscal. It even fell during the non-festive off-season, but business still managed to grow as the conversion ratio was better than in previous years.

"Fewer people spent more at the mall. The sales per square foot at the mall have grown overall to one of the highest in recent years," said a mall official.

Another Shoppers Stop store at Salt Lake City Centre clocked the second-highest per square foot revenue among all Shoppers Stop outlets in the country. Sources said the 42,000 square foot store clocked a revenue of around Rs 150 crore or Rs 35,700 per square foot, against Rs 30,400 per square foot registered at the South City store. There are 117 Shoppers Stop stores in India.

The Pantaloons store at Gariahat once held the record for the highest square foot sales among all multi-brand outlets in the country. Incidentally, this outlet was also the brand's first in the country. The brand, which was a part of Future Group then, is now owned by Aditya Birla Group.

The Raymonds Shop at Poddar Court has once again emerged as the country's highest-grossing store, extending the coveted record that it consistently achieved for over two and a half decades.

Kolkata is a top-performing market for US fast food chain KFC, despite having fewer outlets than other major cities. Before Future Group went bust, the Big Bazaar store at Baguiati, which was also the first in the country, had the highest sales per square foot among hypermarkets in India.
