NEW DELHI: West Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari, along with several BJP MLAs, staged a protest on Monday demanding the resignation of chief minister Mamata Banerjee in the wake of the Supreme Court's recent order that led to the termination of over 26,000 jobs in state-aided schools.
Adhikari alleged that chief minister Mamata Banerjee should be sent to jail, claiming she is the main beneficiary of the recruitment scam.
He further asserted that her nephew accepted a bribe of Rs 700 crore in connection with the case.
"Mamata Banerjee should go to jail. She is the main beneficiary. Her nephew took a bribe of Rs 700 crore, " said Suvendu Adhikari.
Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee offered complete assurance on Monday to qualified candidates who were affected by the Supreme Court's ruling on school employment, emphasising that her administration will ensure continuous employment without any service interruption.
The Supreme Court had on April 3 nullified the appointments of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff in government-run and aided schools across Bengal, declaring the entire recruitment process as "vitiated and tainted".
"I will stand by those who have lost their jobs in an unjust manner. I don't care what others think. I will do everything to restore your dignity," Banerjee said here at a meeting with affected candidates and school staffers.
"We have separate plans in place to ensure that the eligible candidates do not face any break in service. We will not allow them to remain jobless," she said.
As per sources, nearly one in four teaching posts for classes IX to XII has now fallen vacant in the 19,500 state-aided schools.
Of the annulled positions, around 18,500 were teaching posts, while 6,000 belonged to Group C and D staff. These developments have raised serious concerns about the day-to-day functioning and academic continuity in schools.
