  • 12 Kolkata: The Ram Navami celebrations in the city passed off peacefully, cops at Lalbazar said. For the first time in past three years, cops said no cases were drawn up for violations, barring minor complaints of DJs being used in the city on Sunday.

Cops at Lalbazar have warned against believing in any fake news, especially the one naming Park Circus. "With reference to an alleged incident at Park Circus, it is clarified that no permission was taken for any procession, nor did any such movement occur in the area. Upon receiving information about damage to a vehicle, police intervened promptly to restore order. A case is being registered. The public is advised not to heed any rumours," said cops. Sources said the incident at Park Circus was either an accident or a case of personal enmity.

The Bengal police, though, continue to remain on high alert in the wake of another 200 Ram Navami rallies organised on Monday across the state. According to sources, rallies are also lined up at Chandannagore and Bhadreswar on April 9 and at the Asansol-Purulia belt on April 12. "We are reviewing some footage from Tamluk, Suri, Barasat, and Kakinara where some violations were noticed. We will take legal action after sending notice to organisers. However, there was no law-and-order disruption," said a senior official. Banned items like bows and arrows, swords, wooden sticks, and metal rods that were being brandished by the participants, including children, were recovered across the state. "We are preserving the footage," said a senior officer, adding cases will be initiated.
