  • 12 Kolkata: A speeding dumper truck crashed through a height barrier on Aurobindo Setu and dashed into a police kiosk late on Tuesday, leading to traffic disruptions for around an hour.

    No one was injured.

The incident occurred around 10.45 pm, when the dumper truck, travelling at high speed, first struck the bridge's height restriction bar, breaking it to pieces. The vehicle, instead of stopping, sped on and slammed into an unoccupied police kiosk, which housed the signal board, destroying it, too.

Police detained the vehicle's driver and helper for questioning. Senior officers on night round visited the spot to assess the damage.

Emergency workers, including KP's disaster management group members, worked through the night to clear the debris and remove the damaged kiosk.

"We are investigating what led to the accident and will act against those responsible," said an officer. He added police were considering additional safety measures for bridges to prevent similar incidents. The Chingrighata flyover height barrier, too, was severely damaged by a cement mixer last Friday.
