Kol Police cracks down on Dalhousie 2-lane parking, plans to install CCTVs

12 Kolkata: Kolkata Traffic Police on Tuesday launched a drive to remove multi-lane parking in Dalhousie with cops from the headquarter traffic guard doing the rounds of Netaji Subhas Road, India Exchange Place area, and Bentinck Street to identify errant vehicles.
However, TOI found illegal parking rampant in the area on Tuesday afternoon with cars and two-wheelers parked on pavements and blocking entry gates of various offices.
Police said they were aware of the infringements and insisted they would persist with the drive to decongest the central business district. The area has long been plagued by traffic woes. Illegal parking has only exacerbated the situation.
Police are also considering installation of additional CCTV cameras to detect and penalise traffic violations. Officers said a combination of technology and strict enforcement will be key to achieving long-term improvements in traffic management.
Local businesses and commuters have expressed mixed reactions to the drive. While some appreciate the efforts to improve traffic conditions, others are concerned about the potential inconvenience and "excesses" by cops. Still others believe the drive will fizzle out after the IPL season. "The drive is being done only to ensure better traffic flow around Eden Gardens," claimed Viraj Singh, a trader on NS Bose Road.
