Behrampore: Internet services have been suspended in the Jangipur sub-division from Tuesday evening to Friday, and prohibitory orders have been placed following violent protests on the waqf issue. On Wednesday, protesters attempted to block the National Highway 12 in Ahiron under Suti Police Station, about 24km from Tuesday's violent-hit zone, by burning tyres. Police resorted to lathi-charge, and used tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
Apart from this incident, the district remained peaceful. "The situation is calm, peaceful, and under control... Prohibitory orders will continue until 6pm on April 10 (Thursday). The suspension of internet connectivity will remain until 6pm on April 11 (Friday)," said a police officer. Police are on the lookout for a person whose viral video on social media was said to be behind the violence. Those detained were migrant labourers who had come home for Eid, police said.
Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH) organised a peaceful rally in Behrampore town on Wednesday. Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir also addressed the crowd. Behrampore municipality chairperson Naru Gopal Mukhopadhyay was on the streets at Girjamore, helping police control traffic.
Governor C V Ananda Bose has sought a report from the state govt on this matter. According to a statement issued by the officer on special duty (OSD) to the governor's office, the latter strongly deplored the instances of violence.
