Kolkata: The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission has directed Manipal Hospital Dhakuria to pay compensation of Rs 50,000 for the delay in starting the treatment of a patient, who is now in a comatose state at home.
The patient's husband said the woman, with several comorbidities, had cerebral shock at home and was taken to Manipal Mukundapur. A neurosurgeon the next afternoon advised a CT scan at the Dhakuria unit. After the scan, the patient was advised admission in the general ward by a neurologist. But the family wanted ICU admission. The hospital reportedly refused admission under WBHS, citing unavailability of bed under the scheme. She was allegedly left without treatment for five hours. "The hospital's approach was lackadaisical, leading to the delay," said Justice (retd) Ashim Kumar Banerjee, chairman, panel.
In another case, the panel asked cops to ensure the discharge of a patient from Green View Clinic in Sankrail, where the person is being held "ransom" for non-payment of dues. —Sumati Yengkhom
