  • 12 Kolkata: Due to the unavailability of advocate general Kishore Dutta on Wednesday, the matter concerning an ailing woman ‘abandoned' at Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals for over two years will be heard on April 21. The husband of the woman was present in court during the proceedings.

The counsel for the private hospital submitted that in a scenario where the woman has no one to take her back, as the husband in the last hearing stated that he has no means to take care of his disabled wife, it's the state's responsibility to provide her with shelter. The woman has lost her speech, and the lower portion of her body has been paralysed.

The state counsel sought the rescheduling of the hearing as the AG would be representing the state and he was not available at present. A remark was made by the counsel stating that when the husband is available, he should take responsibility. During the brief discussion, Justice Amrita Sinha said: "The court cannot permit the lady to be thrown out of the hospital."

During the previous hearing, the private hospital's counsel informed the court that the hospital treated her, conducted surgery, and the insurance amount of Rs 6 lakh was exhausted long back. The present outstanding amount was Rs 1 crore.
