  • Kolkata: The clay faces of Kali mouled for two eight-foot idols were stolen from a potter's studio in the Kumartuli potters' hub, raising concern among local artisans about the bizarre nature of the crime in the area.

The theft, which occurred on April 6 during the night, was discovered the following morning.

The affected artisan, Indrajit Pal, filed a complaint with the local police station, prompting an investigation that includes reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas.

According to studio workers and the victim's brother, Rudrajit Pal, the crafting of idol faces requires significant time and skill. Local artisans suspect the theft may be motivated by potential resale value. The Kumartuli Artisans' Association has been notified of the incident.

While the theft occurred several months before the Kali Puja festival, production of festival idols is already underway in the historic pottery district. Several completed idols are being transferred to warehouses pending final painting work.

Cops said additional security measures are being considered for the artisan district.
