Ultraviolette to begin European sales of performance e-bikes

123 Kolkata: Bengaluru-based e-bike maker Ultraviolette is set to ship the first consignment of performance motorcycles to Germany by early next month. While Royal Enfield sells bikes in Europe, Ultraviolette is poised to become the first Indian e-bike manufacturer to sell in European markets.
"Retail sales of F77 Mach2 motorcycles will start in Germany in June. The distributors are already in place. Thereafter, we will start sales in Spain, followed by France, the UK, and the Netherlands. Our products have been undergoing trials in Europe for a year now. It took around 18 months to get the certification in place," said Ultraviolette CEO & co-founder Narayan Subramaniam.
The company has showcased the F77 along with the yet-to-be-launched scooter Tesseract at EICMA in Milan, as well as at expos in Germany, France and Italy.
While Indian roads demand more robust suspension than Europe, where rides are smoother due to the superior quality of roads, the challenge there is higher average speeds with different drive cycles than India, which affects range.
Ultraviolette, which will launch its motorcycle at the introductory price of 9,999 Euros, has targeted 30% of the revenue from Europe by 2028 with sales of around 20,000 units. In the Indian market, where it competes with other e-bike manufacturers like Revolt Motors, Tork Motors, Oben Electric and Simple Energy, it is targeting sales of around 80,000 units a year by 2028.
The company, which started developing its motorcycle in 2016 and introduced the first product only last year, says it had the global benchmarks on performance as well as quality in mind right from the initial stage.
"Our approach has been somewhat like Tesla, which introduced the Model S first and then products in the lower segment. We, too, started with the sports bike with a 30 kW motor and 10.3 kWh battery capacity and a range of 323 km, followed by a scooter with a 20 kW power output that is twice that of the competition. And it has all been possible because of our R&D team that includes people who have worked at Tesla, Honda, Safran, Honeywell, Rubicon, Apple and other leading industries," Subramaniam added.
