  • KOLKATA: A 33-year-old man, under treatment for depression and mental issues, was arrested on Friday morning for allegedly killing his mother at their flat in Rajarhat Vedic Village.

The man allegedly confessed before the cops that he had stabbed his mother, spent the night with her lifeless body and then informed others about it. The gruesome nature of the crime has left residents of Greentech City in Vedic Village shocked and horrified.

The accused, Soumik Majumdar, allegedly stabbed his 58-year-old mother Debjani Majumdar to death late Thursday night after a heated argument. The murder came to light on Friday when Soumik approached the tea vendor with the statement: "I've killed my mother. I haven't eaten all night. Is there any food?"

Startled by the bizarre question, the tea vendor noticed Soumik's disoriented behavior — shaking limbs, mumbling lips, and a vacant stare. He immediately alerted the security guards, who then forced open the apartment door to find the horrific sight.

Blood was smeared across the floor. Debjani Majumdar had sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck and shoulder. Cops found a bloodied chair, signs of struggle, and a deep wound at the back of her head, suggesting she had been thrown violently to the floor during the attack.

Police believe the murder took place between 11 pm and midnight on Thursday. Soumik reportedly attempted to stage the murder as a suicide by placing the weapon next to his mother and cleaning his own wounds. But in the morning, he walked to the tea stall and made the shocking admission. However, after his arrest, Soumik denied committing the crime.

The Majumdar family originally lived in Santoshpur. They moved to the Vedic Village apartment around 2021, following the death of Soumik's father, Soumendra Majumder. The flat had been purchased by his father. Since then, Soumik lived with his mother.

According to police sources, Soumik had worked at a BPO until about a year ago, when he lost his job. Since then, he had reportedly been suffering from depression.

Abdul Rashid, a resident of the complex, mentioned that Soumik would go around asking everyone for money and food. In recent months, they couldn't pay the electricity bills and maintenance charges.

Tea vendor Rabin Biswas revealed that Soumik had previously made vague statements like "I've killed my mother". Each time, his mother was later seen alive, leading most to dismiss his words. This time, however, the statement proved true. "There were no neighbours nearby to hear or report any noise during the incident," said a senior officer. "The victim likely tried to escape after the attack began, but was overpowered. She suffered multiple wounds, and the attack appears to have been committed in a state of extreme mental distress."

Police are now investigating the motive behind the murder. While financial distress and mental health issues are suspected factors, police are examining all possible angles. Soumik was produced before a district court and was remanded to judicial custody.
