  • 123 Kolkata: Bidhannagar Police are considering legal provisions to conduct a psychoanalysis of the 33-year-old man who was arrested for allegedly killing his mother at their flat in Rajarhat Vedic Village on Friday. He has been under judicial custody since then.

Soumik Majumdar, who was arrested for killing his mother, Debjani (58), following a heated exchange of words, was described as a man of unsound mind by his neighbours and relatives alike. They claimed he was suffering from depression and was under regular treatment for his mental condition. The woman had eight stab wounds on her body, police said.

Police said Soumik repeatedly stabbed his mother, dragged her lifeless body from one room to another, and spent the night with the body before confessing to the murder at a tea stall outside the housing complex, Greentech City at Vedic Village, on Friday morning. After his arrest, Soumik, however, refused to admit to killing his mother and claimed he found her lifeless body at home. He even changed his bloodstained shirt and tried to wipe the bloodstains from the home floor, police said.

Seeing his condition, the cops didn't appeal for his police custody and sought judicial custody instead. "The forensic examination of the flat will be conducted on Monday. Following that, we will be speaking to legal aids and mental health professionals to see if a psychoanalysis can be conducted on the man to know the possibility of severe mental illness influencing his actions," said an official.
