  • 123 Kolkata: A trusted caregiver appointed to care for an elderly and ailing resident at a housing complex in Baguiati was arrested for allegedly stealing gold ornaments and cash worth approximately Rs 4 lakh from the family she was working for over the last two and a half years.

    The accused, Lalita Giri, a resident of Indira Nagar in North 24 Parganas' Sodepur, was employed as a caregiver by the Roy family to look after an 82-year-old woman since the end of 2022. She worked at their residence in Deshbandhunagar under the jurisdiction of Baguiati police station daily from 8 am till 7 pm.

    According to a written complaint by Suman Roy, the elderly woman's son, the theft was discovered on April 10 morning. was found that multiple gold jewellery items and Rs 2,500 in cash were missing from their home.The total value of the stolen gold is estimated to be several lakhs of rupees.

    Suspicion immediately fell on Lalita, who stopped reporting to work after April 9. Following the complaint, Baguiati police started an investigation and tracked down the accused in quick time. She was arrested shortly afterward.

    "We have recovered majority of the stolen items and are continuing our probe," said a senior cop from Baguiati PS.
