Two brothers, neighbours of the two Murshidabad riot victims, were arrested on Monday for hacking to death septuagenarian Hargobindo Das and his son Chandan (40) in Jafrabad village under Shamsherganj police station on April 12.
Hargobindo's widow, Parul, had in her FIR named one of the brothers and five others whom she could identify in a mob of 150-200 armed people who barged into their home and dragged her husband and son out before hacking them to death.
Dildar Nadab was arrested from a hideout near the Bangladesh border under Suti police station while brother Kalu was picked up from Murarai in Birbhum.
Brothers Kalu Nadab alias Asabul and Dilbar Nadab, are residents of Digra, the village next to Jafrabad. Kalu was the first to be picked up. His questioning led us to his brother Dilbar," ADG (law and order) Jawed Shamim said. Dildar, cops suspect, had plans to cross the border.
The five others named in the FIR — Yusuf Sheikh, Akbar Sheikh, Hazrat Ali, Nurul Sheikh and Ansar Ali — are all locals. Cops are questioning Kalu and Dildar to track them down and also to find out if the brothers had any personal enmity with the victims. "A special investigation team has been formed that includes officers from the local police, CID, STF, and IB. We collected CCTV footage and identified several individuals directly involved in the murders. We arrested two in an overnight operation and have identified the others. None involved in this heinous crime will be spared," said Supratim Sarkar, ADG (South Bengal), in Samsherganj. The multi-agency probe is being monitored by DIG Midnapore Syed Waquar Raza. ADG Sarkar said 221 people had been arrested till Tuesday for the Murshidabad violence.
The investigators did not comment on allegations of "outsider involvement" but confirmed that there was evidence of some miscreants crossing the Ganga and fleeing to Jharkhand. Cops said an April 11 CCTV footage from Dakbunglow More on NH 12 showed some protesters breaking off from the anti-Waqf protest and later reassembling was also being probed.
