Kolkata: For better management of daily waste collection and disposal in New Town, New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is to appoint separate waste collecting agencies for each of the three action areas of the township.
These agencies will collect segregated waste from households and public places and transport the waste to specified disposal grounds or waste processing units for the next five years.
"The idea behind separating each Action Area as three separate zones is not only to improve the waste collection and transport system but to keep a backup option, as now only a single agency collects the entire waste from New Town. The aim is that if any agency fails to perform its daily duty for on a particular day for an emergency , the others will be able to provide back-up support so that the waste collection system does not get hit," an official said.
NKDA officials said that another reason why the waste collection and disposal system needs to be strengthened is the amount of daily generated waste will soon increase nearly three times than what is being produced now.
This is because the neighbourhood area of New Town, which is under the NKDA and Hidco planning area, has been included under the solid waste integration plan.
"A plan is already on to set up waste processing and recycling plants in each of the three Action Areas and another in the neighbourhood area in Rajarhat," said an NKDA official.
