The West Bengal police arrested two persons who were allegedly involved in the murder of a father and son in the violence-hit Samsherganj of Murshidabad district.

ADG (South Bengal range) Supratim Sarkar said, “After verifying CCTV footage and other evidence, we conducted a search operation for the whole night on Monday and were able to nab these two persons who are directly involved in this murder case.”

Police said the two accused are brothers, Kalu Madab and Dildar Madab, who are residents of the Digri area, near Jafrabad under the Samsherganj police station of Murshidabad.

“Both fled after the murder. We nabbed Kalu from Murarai of Birbhum and Dildar was arrested from a location bordering the area of Suti police station,” said Sarkar.

Sarkar added, “We have made a special investigation team for this murder case. We will not spare anybody who is involved in this murder, directly or indirectly. We will arrest everybody.”

Last Friday, Chandan Das (40) and his father Hargobind Das (70) were hacked to death by a mob as protests in West Bengal against the new Waqf (Amendment) Act turned violent in the Murshidabad district.

The father and son were among the three killed in the violence Friday, and at least 15 policemen were injured. Later, the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of Central Armed Forces in the affected areas. According to the state government, over 220 people have been arrested so far.

Sarkar said, “The situation of this area is normalising. To stop rumour-mongering, we blocked some Whatsapp groups and social networking groups. We are also monitoring social networking mediums throughout the day.”

Amid the unrest, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan had held a video conference with the West Bengal Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to review the situation. The Home Ministry reiterated its concern over the breakdown of law and order in Murshidabad. Additional Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been deployed in the area.
