Jalpaiguri: Bangladeshi miscreants abducted an Indian national from Rajarbari area on Wednesday morning, allegedly to avenge the death of a Bangladeshi smuggler who was shot by BSF a couple of hours earlier.
The incidents, which occurred a couple of kilometres apart, were reported from the border area in Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar's Mathabhanga subdivision.
Early on Wednesday, BSF jawans patrolling the Gachhtala area in Golenahati GP shot a Bangladeshi smuggler, who later succumbed to his injuries at Cooch Behar Medical College and Hospital.
Locals claimed Bangladeshi miscreants abducted Ukil Barman when he and his wife Sobha crossed the fence to till their land under Fulbari Tilak border outpost. Sobha somehow managed to escape and inform villagers.
The incident triggered massive anger among locals. BSF officials reached the spot and tried to hold a flag meeting with their Bangladeshi counterparts to get Ukil back, but that was not achieved till late evening.
