Kolkata: Junior Union minister and Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar sat on a dharna with 11 victims of Murshidabad violence in front of Bhabani Bhawan on Wednesday, demanding a meeting with DGP Rajeev Kumar.
The deadlock ended after two-and-a-half hours after the BJP delegation was allowed to enter the Bengal Police headquarters. After meeting the DGP, Majumdar said they were not satisfied with the assurances.
Majumdar, accompanied by BJP state general secretary Jagannath Chattopadhyay, party neta Tapas Roy and the victims, reached Bhabani Bhawan around 5pm. Police officials tried to convince them that it would not be possible to meet the DGP without a prior appointment, but the BJP netas were adamant. This led to a heated exchange.
When cops asked them to move citing "traffic issues", Majumdar said: "These displaced people have come from Malda and you're talking about traffic. If the DG is busy in a meeting, we'll wait until it concludes."
Earlier during the day, Majumdar held a press conference with the victims, where a woman from Shamsherganj claimed police did not save them but BSF did. The victims also demanded a BSF camp in their area for safety as they were too afraid to return to their homes. This prompted Majumdar to announce that he would meet the DGP along with the victims.
After waiting for nearly an hour, Majumdar said they were even ready if the DGP wished to meet them in front of the main gate. "He went to the trouble-torn area but did not speak to these victims," he said.
Majumdar added that the outcome of the investigation was still not known. "An elderly woman crossed a river to save her life. There are many who suffered," he said.
Around 7.20 pm, the BJP team received permission to speak with the state police chief at Bhabani Bhawan.
