On Wednesday, a Public Interest Litigation was filed to Calcutta High Court’s division bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Chaitali Chatterjee demanding a National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation and shelter for those left homeless in the case of recent arson and violence in Murshidabad.
According to the petitioner, over 300 families have been rendered homeless.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) also filed a PILto the bench on Thursday. Counsel Anindiya Sundar Das for the VHP submitted that they want an NIA investigation, a CBI investigation, and compensation from the State government for the affected families.
Meanwhile, some of the families have moved a petition to Justice Tirthankar Ghosh’s bench. The counsel for the families have appealed for an NIA investigation in the case. According to the petitioners, bombs were allegedly hurled at their houses, and police allegedly did not come to the rescue when they were called. The petitioners further alleged that they did not receive a reply to the emails they sent to police. The matter is likely to be heard on Thursday.
On Saturday, the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of Central forces in the violence-hit district of Murshidabad where three people were killed and 15 police personnel injured after a protest against the amended Waqf law turned violent on Friday.
