  • NEW DELHI: West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday addressed the ongoing issue of violence in the state, identifying violence and corruption as two critical problems affecting the state's political landscape."

"The cult of violence is a reality in Bengal. We have two cancerous growths on the body politic of West Bengal -- one is violence, and the other is corruption. We have to strike at the roots of this. I'm sure that victory will be ours," Bose told ANI whilst travelling to violence-affected regions in Murshidabad and Malda.

He reported that whilst the Raj Bhavan's "Peace Room" continues receiving numerous complaints from affected areas, the numbers have reduced considerably since Central Forces were deployed.

"We have been getting 100 such requests and complaints from the field. In the last two days, the number has come down significantly after the deployment of the Central Forces. I also talked to the complainants selectively, especially those who are in great distress, directly with them to reassure them that we are all with them," he stated.

The Governor mentioned his plans to visit rehabilitation camps in Malda and confirmed seeking Red Cross assistance to enhance relief efforts.

"They are distributing whatever is required there because the Red Cross is an international organisation that can even operate in war zones. We'll certainly mobilise all resources to bring relief and succour to the affected people," the Governor explained.

He indicated his intention to remain cautious in the present circumstances.

"This is a democracy where various suggestions come. It will be properly considered by the appropriate authorities. I have been in constant contact with all concerned, particularly the state government and the central government, informing them and sharing opinions with them," he continued.

"We will see that peace and normalcy are established. We will certainly take care of the affected people. We'll take a long-term approach to ensure that the root of violence is terminated in the bud, and that is going to be a commitment as Governor to the people of Bengal," he affirmed.

The Governor is travelling to Malda to inspect areas affected by recent protests regarding the Waqf amendment Act.

Upon arrival in Malda, he will first visit the Circuit House before proceeding to examine violence-affected locations in the district. Subsequently, Governor Bose will assess the situation in Murshidabad district.

The visit follows violent incidents that occurred on April 11 during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, resulting in three fatalities, multiple injuries and extensive property damage. Several families have relocated to Jharkhand's Pakur district, whilst others have sought shelter in Malda's relief camps.

The Calcutta high court announced on Thursday that central forces would remain in Murshidabad to maintain order, confirming the court's oversight of victim rehabilitation and restoration.

The court additionally directed BJP, TMC and other officials to refrain from making inflammatory speeches that might heighten tensions.
