  • The Das family in Murshidabad’s Samserganj area could not perform the shradh ceremony of the father and son killed in last Friday’s violence as the priest didn’t turn up “out of fear”.

On April 11, Harogobindo Das (70) and his son Chandan (40) were killed by a mob at Jafrabad in Samsergunj area during the violence during the newly enacted Waqf law.

“Today was the shradh ceremony. We had asked a purohit (priest). But he said he can’t come because it is a security issue,” Chitradeep Das, a relative of Harogobindo, said.

“We arranged another purohit (priest). But he stays in Basudevpur, which is 5 km away. He said he can’t come because there is no security here. I went to the his house and got Gangajal. We have decided that when we feel secure, we will observe shradh ceremony,” said Bapon Das, nephew of the Harogobindo Das.

Earlier, Chandan’s wife while narrating the last Friday’s incident had said, “We kept calling the police when people started attacking our home. No one picked up. Even after they hacked my husband and father-in-law to death, their bodies lay near the house for three hours.”

Meanwhile, ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar said that one more person has been arrested in connection with the murder of father-son duo. With this, three persons have been arrested for the double-murder. “We are doing everything to bring the culprits, directly and indirectly connected to the murder, to book,” Sarkar said.

“Inzmam Ul Haque is a resident of Suri para, which is just adjacent to the place of crime. Haq was not only the perpetrator of the crime but also tried to tamper evidence by destroying local CCTV connections,” Sarkar added.

“Let me tell you all, whoever is directly or indirectly involved in the crime, they will be nabbed. We will expedite the filing of chargesheet to ensure all the perpetrators face stringent punishment,” The ADG added.

Previously, two brothers —Kalu Nawab and Dildar Nawab — were arrested. Both of them are in police custody The Nawab brothers were neighbours of Das family.
