Internet restrictions in Murshidabad lifted, 30 fresh FIRs lodged by SIT in 48 hours

Kolkata: Internet restrictions in Shamsherganj and Suti — spread across five pin code areas in Murshidabad — were withdrawn on Friday, with cops not seeking any further extension of restrictions after 6pm.
The SIT of Bengal Police, formed to probe the violence, lodged more than 30 fresh FIRs in 48 hours after members fanned out to some of the most affected zones like Sajur More, Bethbona and Dak Bunglow More to speak to families and collect evidence. "We now have around 100 cases to investigate," said a DIG.
The SIT carried out extensive photography and videography of the victims' properties and forensic experts collected evidence. "We have assigned officers to oversee zones and to collate evidence and coordinate with investigators," the DIG added.
Within the police force, there is an ongoing deliberation regarding a potential "intelligence failure" leading up to the Murshidabad riots. This issue was also reportedly a key point of discussion during a meeting of the 20-member SIT.
A senior officer at Bhabani Bhawan said several imams gave speeches stressing peace and communal harmony after Friday prayers in Jangipur, following a special request from the administration.
"No congregation, procession or blockade was reported from not just Jangipur, but across the state," said a top official.
SIT has sought help from the cyber crime unit and STF to ensure there is no fresh rumour-mongering now that internet services have been restored. Top officers said the situation was "fully under control" and that rumours should be shunned. "Do not believe rumours. We are putting up pickets and attending calls wherever we receive complaints. Life and property of everyone is our responsibility," said a senior officer.
