  • 123 Kolkata: Your commute to work on the first workday next week will be a breeze, and so will your plans to watch the IPL match at Eden Gardens. However, those who plan to cross central Kolkata on Sunday are advised to take the Metro instead, as per the Kolkata Traffic Police, due to the Brigade Rally call given by the frontal workers' unions of the Left.

The 'Deprived Job Seekers' protest march to Nabanna, planned for Monday, was "temporarily postponed," its conveners from Eikyamancha informed Kolkata Police on Saturday. According to sources, a meeting took place on Friday with top officials from Bhawani Bhavan, Lalbazar, and the Howrah Police Commissionerate. During the meeting, police officials assured the leaders of the platform that their demands would be communicated to the govt and discussed with the Chief Secretary. The police officials promised to make efforts to resolve their issues as quickly as possible. Following this assurance, the decision to postpone the march was made.

Ashish Khamrai, the convener of the platform, stated, "There have been multiple meetings with the top police officials. We were requested not to proceed with the march to Nabanna at this time. We were assured that our demands would be considered, and they asked for some time. Therefore, we have decided to give the administration another chance and postpone this march to Nabanna."

Kolkata Police were busy on Saturday preparing for the Brigade Rally, which is expected to see multiple rallies from key spots in the city like Howrah Station and Sealdah Station converge at the Brigade grounds starting around noon. The main programme is likely to conclude not before the afternoon.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma on Saturday warned his men to become more "proactive" with law and order assignments. Though the top cop did not mention Bhangar or Kasba, he insisted that "prior information and intelligence gathering" by all involved units was important. Verma was addressing the monthly crime conference when he made this observation.

Based on CP Verma's instructions, with the police anticipating traffic congestion in different parts of Kolkata due to processions and gatherings from morning till noon, the police are insisting on devising dedicated routes for rallyists without entirely stopping the movement of commuters. In all, three DCPs and 20 ACPs will lead 2,000 cops on the ground.

The cops learned that more than seven large processions are expected to arrive at the Brigade from the morning. After assembling at eight locations, including Sealdah and Howrah stations, RSM Square, Park Circus Maidan, Hastings Crossing, Victoria House, and Exide Crossing, leftist workers will march to the Brigade. Additionally, several smaller processions are expected to come from various parts of the city. The police suspect that these small and large processions might sporadically disrupt traffic in different parts of the city, causing inconvenience to the public on the holiday.

Among the spots and roads where traffic might slow down once the rally starts from Howrah Station are Howrah Bridge, Brabourne Road, Rabindra Sarani, Bentinck Street, and Esplanade. Meanwhile, party workers coming to the rally from Sealdah Station will take AJC Bose Road, SN Banerjee Road, and Dharmatala to reach the Brigade. This could sporadically disrupt traffic on Chittaranjan Avenue, Ashutosh Mukherjee Road, Red Road, Park Street, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, AJC Bose Road, and CIT Road.

However, Lalbazar has stated that 24 key locations have been selected to maintain normal traffic flow on the holiday. Additional traffic police forces will be stationed there. At 13 of these locations, a team led by an additional AC of the traffic guard will be present, primarily to try and keep traffic normal, according to police claims. They stated that the police force will start working from early Sunday morning in various areas adjacent to the Brigade.

Additionally, specific arrangements have been made for parking vehicles coming to the Brigade rally. The police have specified where vehicles from different districts will be parked. Besides the Maidan area, arrangements have been made to park vehicles on roads like AJC Bose Road and Mayo Road on Sunday.
