  • Kolkata: To arrange for immediate disbursal of compensation to the victims of Murshidabad violence, Bengal chief secretary Manoj Pant held a meeting with district officials on Saturday. The meeting also aimed to assess the loss incurred in the destruction of properties.

This comes after Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee urged officials last week to evaluate the loss in Shamsherganj and Dhuliyan, and assured compensation to traders whose shops were burnt or vandalised.

In his report to the CS, the district magistrate of Murshidabad informed that officials had identified around 109 houses that had been damaged, and they would be rebuilt under the Banglar Bari scheme, said sources. Pant directed officials to quickly disburse the funds to the victims. However, sources said that an official told Pant that the process of compensation was being delayed since many of the violence-affected were yet to return home, and some had lost their documents.

Pant also asked officials to provide relief material to those who had already returned.
