12 Kolkata: Parks and playgrounds in different localities across Salt Lake, maintained by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), are getting revamped with more green patches, children's play zones, repaired and painted boundary walls and other amenities.
TOI visited some of the parks and playgrounds across Salt Lake to check their condition. Residents said though several parks are well-maintained, some need attention.
"The park at DL Block is well-maintained but not much maintenance can be seen at CK-CL Park. Weeds overgrow during every monsoon," said Krishnendu Chowdhury, a resident of CL Block.
At AE Block, there are two parks. While the park at AE Block Part I side is well-maintained with a large football ground and illumination, the park at AE Part II side is lying neglected.
"The AE Part II park is not properly maintained. The pathway at the park's periphery is broken ," said Tapas Sengupta, secretary of AE Block Samaj Kalyan Sangha.
In BMC Ward 40 area, comprising a large area of Salt Lake, the DC Block park just beside City Centre Mall had been renovated. CD Block park is being renovated. "The ground of the park will be further developed. A proper pathway will be developed to move towards the community centre and the children's park will be widened," said BMC MMIC and ward 40 councillor, Tulsi Sinha Roy.
Roy said after CD Park, next in line will be EC Block park, for which estimates have been prepared and the tender process is ongoing. Civic officials said each year, weeds that grow in the parks during monsoon were being cleaned up from time to time. "The larger park at the GD Block is being spruced up for sports," said Kumar Shankar Sadhu, an elderly resident and former president of GD Block Welfare Association. The block resident welfare associations said it was up to the civic authorities to maintain and upkeep the parks.
"The block committees inform the local civic ward committee to clean up the parks before Puja," said an FD Block resident.
