• Suvendu in HC as cops refuse Contai event on April 30

  • 123 Kolkata: State leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari moved Calcutta High Court on Monday after police rejected his application for holding a Maha Sanatani Dharma Sammelan at Contai on April 30, the day CM Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to inaugurate the Jagannath Temple in Digha.

Police had turned down Adhikari's application on the ground that the proposed sammelan venue at Contai was adjacent to NH-116B, the route several dignitaries would be taking that day for the temple inauguration programme. Cops also cited that there was a scheduled Sitala puja at Nachinda temple in the vicinity on that day.

Counsel for the petitioner Billwadal Bhattacharya submitted that police had no jurisdiction in the matter. "In this case, the proposed venue is a private place," he said. AG Kishore Datta would make his submission on Tuesday and senior counsel Kalyan Bandyopadhyay would represent the DM and the SP.
