Kolkata: At least three workers, who have been engaged in the construction of a multipurpose cold storage and horticulture centre near Krishak Bazar at Chowbhaga in Anandapur, sustained injures after being allegedly assaulted by some extortionists over the last weekend.
The facility is being built under the aegis of West Bengal Agro Industries Corporation Limited. The accused allegedly demanded money from the workers and employment for their own men.
The construction firm has lodged a police complaint. Anandapur Police has already detained a couple of locals. "The extortionists chased the workers with bamboo sticks, bhujali (dagger) and shabol (crowbar)," said Sanjoy Dutta, the project-in-charge. CM Mamata Banerjee has desired completion of the project at the earliest but the work has often been affected due to the accused, the FIR states.
