123 Kolkata: Assistant sub inspector Aminur Rehman, posted with Bansdroni police station, who allegedly slapped an app bike rider while trying to issue a challan to him during a routine check, has been suspended till the inquiry against him is completed.
Cops have identified two areas where Rehman faces probe. Firstly, whether he indeed slapped the app bike rider. Secondly, the cops will investigate why Rehman demanded the bike papers from the victim, given that he is not authorised to seize vehicle documents. "Only sergeants, in the rank of sub-inspectors, and senior officers above them are allowed to seize such documents. It needs to be seen who provided him the authority to seize documents. The probe is being handled by the divisional DCP of south suburban division," said a senior officer at Lalbazar.
A senior officer involved in the probe said there was instigation from the other side too, with allegations that Rehman was a fake cop. "While a portion of the conversation has now been made public, the initial conversation between the two has not been uploaded," he said.
"An inquiry has been initiated. The ASI has been suspended. The complainant was not wearing a helmet, and when asked to show his licence, he started making a scene and called the ASI ‘fake police'. Whatever the instigation is, if the ASI indeed slapped the rider, it goes against our operational manuals. Hence, the probe is important," said this officer.
The incident, which occurred in an undisclosed location in the Bansdroni-Garia area, has sparked public outrage after footage circulated on Facebook showing a confrontation between an assistant sub-inspector and a bike-taxi driver over digital vehicle documents.
