  • Kolkata: The School Service Commission chairperson, Siddhartha Majumder, was allowed to leaved his office on Wednesday after 46 hours. The demonstration in front of Acharya Sadan in Salt Lake, however, continued.

Protesting teachers stated that their movement would continue even if a list was published by the education department. The demand for releasing tainted and untainted candidates was partially fulfilled as the education department sent a list of untainted SSC candidates to school district inspectors' offices. But protesting teachers emphasised that around 25 eligible candidates' names were missing from the list.

Chinmoy Mandal, a prominent face of the protest, said his name was not on the list. "We have spoken to the chairperson, and he told us that he was looking into the matter."

Several teachers, who had been on the road for the past three days, were spotted leaving after district-wise lists of untainted candidates were distributed to DI offices to be circulated to respective schools under them. Debdyuti Halder, a physical science teacher from North 24 Parganas, said, "If I get my salary, then it's my duty to return to school. I will join classes from Thursday. The protest will go on. I will strike a balance between conducting classes and attending the protest because it's a fight for our existence and dignity."

Group C and D staffers have also been protesting in front of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) office. The Supreme Court did not give any relief to these staffers. Demanding their jobs back, a section of these employees started a sit-in protest in front of the WBBSE office, while eight representatives started a hunger-strike inside the secondary board's office. Koushik Mandal, a clerk at a state-aided school who was on the hunger strike, fell ill and had to be shifted to CCU.

A section of primary school job-seekers also staged a protest at Karunamoyee on Wednesday, demanding to start the recruitment process in the primary section as well.
