123 Kolkata: Refusing to direct authorities to take a policy decision, Calcutta High Court on Thursday dismissed a PIL seeking the segregation of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) from Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality for the betterment of Bidhannagar residents.
"It is evidently clear that somebody wants to do power politics… There is some personal interest involved, and it cannot be treated as a PIL," Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam observed. He further stated, "We are not here to tell them which municipality needs to be merged with which corporation. This is not our business. It is a policy decision."

The PIL was filed by three persons, including an advocate and former BMC councillor Ashes Mukherjee, and two Salt Lake residents. Their main contention was that the amalgamation of Bidhannagar Municipality with Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality in 2016, forming BMC, led to "severe deterioration in civic amenities, including road maintenance, drainage, waste management, mosquito control, and overall infrastructure."
"Despite repeated representation to govt, no corrective measures were taken," it was stated by the petitioners. While dismissing the PIL, the high court asked the petitioners to make representations before authorities.
