  • Malda: The main accused in the Jan 2 murder of Trinamool's Malda vice-president Dulal Sarkar was finally arrested on Friday morning. Krishna Rajak, alias Rohan, was held from Bihar's Katihar after being on the run for nearly four months.

Police had announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for any information on Rajak. With his arrest, the total arrests in the case now stand at nine. One more accused, Bablu Yadav, is still at large.

Sarkar, a five-time councillor of English Bazar municipality, was chased by assailants and shot three times while he tried to hide in a shop. Police said the murder took place around 10.30am when Sarkar was on a visit to his plywood factory at Jhaljhalia on the Malda-Kotwali State Highway. The attackers had been trailing his car on a bike.

Amid a huge political uproar, police started a probe and arrested another heavyweight TMC neta and former chairman of English Bazar municipality, Narendra Nath Tiwari. Tiwari was accused of being the main conspirator.

Tiwari and seven others are behind bars and cops recently submitted a charge sheet against them.

Rajak and Yadav, who reportedly led the operation, were at large. They fled to another state and were constantly changing their address. Police were pursuing them, keeping in touch with other states.

Rajak was produced in a Malda court and sent to police custody for seven days. A source said Rajak was the mediator between Tiwari and the shooters to complete the operation. Formerly a follower of Sarkar, Rajak had a tiff with him over a property.
