Kasba man in police custody for alleged murder of wife over suspected affair

KOLKATA: Janardhan Mondal (36), arrested for allegedly murdering his wife Rina Mondal (33) at the car parking lot of a Kasba complex on Thursday afternoon, was sent to police custody until May 2. Mondal was produced at the Alipore court on Friday, where the Public Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal informed the police that they needed to question Janardhan to recover the murder weapon. He also informed the court that a reconstruction of the murder was required.
Police sleuths claimed that while Mondal repeated that the murder was because he suspected his wife was in an illicit affair, the police suspect that the victim was planning to lodge a domestic violence case against Janardhan, which infuriated him. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact motive behind the murder.
Police sources said they seized a blood-stained ladies' purse and slippers of Rina from the murder spot, which will now be sent for forensic examination. Residents of a residential complex located on RK Chatterjee Road were left in utter shock on Thursday afternoon after Rina was attacked with a chopper and slashed repeatedly in the car parking lot of the complex. The incident was reported around 1.15 pm.
"Information was received around 1.15 pm that Janardhan Mondal, residing at Jahurabazar in Kasba, came to the complex and began asking people about his wife Rina, who works as a caregiver cum domestic help in the flats located in this complex," said an investigating officer. The accused accosted his wife in the parking lot, and a quarrel ensued. "Suddenly, Janardhan stabbed his wife with a sharp weapon over the issue of a family dispute.
