• ‘Kolkata slums to come under Thika Tenancy Act’

  • Kolkata: Slums in the city will be brought under the Thika Tenancy Act, said mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday. This comes at a time when there were complaints about a section of land sharks eyeing prime bustee land for promotional purposes. Some slums were allegedly being set on fire purposely to help these land sharks meet their goals, sources claimed. Two such cases were reported in the Bhowanipore neighbourhoods in recent months.

The state has also decided to open a special window for clearing applications claiming legal heirship to bustee huts. "Forms will be available at the special counter at thika controller offices for applying for the transfer of names for a property under thika land," said Hakim. According to a KMC official, once a tenant of thika land acquires lessee status, they will be allowed to build a home without restrictions on the height of the building. For securing lessee status, thika tenants will have to apply to the thika cell at the KMC headquarters. A bench comprising senior state govt officials, including the chief secretary, will take a call on their approval.
