• Focus on water plant boost to reduce groundwater use in Kolkata

  • 12 Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is working to complete water supply augmentation projects for residents in five boroughs, who still rely on groundwater. According to an estimate, the KMC water supply department needs to extract a significant 40 million gallons of ground water for the residents of the Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt, Behala, Garia, and areas located off EM Bypass. The KMC is focussing on reducing dependence on groundwater.

    The KMC leadership is monitoring the timely completion of water treatment plants and water booster pumping stations. Currently, the KMC is focusing on the construction of a water treatment plant at Jai Hind water treatment plant, better known as Dhapa water treatment plant. The KMC water supply department needs to spend around Rs 100 crore for the augmentation of the treatment plant, said a KMC senior official.Its current capacity is 30 million gallons of filtered water every day to cater to the needs of over 8 lakh people off EM Bypass. The civic body has decided to augment its capacity by 20 million gallons, a KMC official said, adding the augmentation will benefit residents of Topsia, Anandapur, Naskarhat, Kasba, Madurdaha, and Kalikapur. The KMC has undertaken the construction of a 10-million-gallon capacity water treatment plant near Dhalai Bridge (New Garia) to cater to Bypass neighbourhoods and Garia-Jadavpur belt.
