Days after communal violence broke out in parts of Murshidabad district, the West Bengal government on Friday transferred two Superintendents of Police from the region with immediate effect.
According to a notification issued by the state secretariat, Nabanna, on Friday, Surya Pratap Yadav, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Murshidabad will take over as the Commanding Officer, Narayani Battalion, in Cooch Behar. Anand Roy, the SP of Jangipur Police District has been made Commanding Officer, EFR, 3rd Battalion in Salua.
Ranaghat SP Kumar Sunni Raj will take charge as SP in Murshidabad and Amit Kumar Shaw, who was holding the post of DC (TP) of Kolkata Police, will be new the SP of Jangipur Police District.
However, officials claims that this is a routine transfer.
The move comes a week after the West Bengal Police replaced the OCs (officers in-charge) of Samserganj and Suti police stations, in the wake of the violence that broke out in Jangipur area of Murshidabad district during a protest against the newly enacted Waqf law. Three persons were killed and thousands displaced following incidents of loot, vandalism, attack on April 11 and 12.
The West Bengal Police has also cautioned people to be alert of fake social media profiles claiming to be residents of Murshidabad district and spreading disinformation. Police said that they found these fake profiles posting “anti-national comments and inciting communal hatred”.
