  • Malda: Two recent murders in Malda's English Bazar, originally thought to have been committed by miscreants from Bangladesh (including Rohingya in one case), were acts carried out by locals, said police. Personal enmity seemed to have been the cause for both murders, cops added.

Around 6pm on Saturday, a 63-year-old guard at a Mahadipur mango orchard was found unconscious in the orchard with injury marks on his body. Taken to hospital, Radheshyam Ghosh was declared dead. Villagers took to the streets in protest, claiming miscreants had crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border to kill Ghosh. The victim's son, Prasanta, lodged a complaint against unknown miscreants. At night, however, father-son duo Motilal Ghosh and Rajkumar Ghosh were held by police for questioning.

Also on Saturday, two men — Uttam Ghosh and Biswajit Ruidas — were arrested for the April 23 murder of Nimai Mondal. The 25-year-old was on night vigil when he was attacked. Following the murder, villagers had blocked the state highway. BJP MP Khagen Murmu had blamed Rohingya for the murder. Police said Ghosh and Ruidas were Mondal's neighbours. "They confessed and the murder weapon has also been recovered," a police officer said.
