  • 123 Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has initiated the process to appoint an agency for further repair and retrofitting work on the fire-affected Durgapur bridge. The authorities are also in the process of engaging an agency for year-round emergency repair work on Jibanananda Setu.

Officials said that a consultant was earlier engaged for a structural health study of the Durgapur bridge following the fire incident. "It was recommended to conduct carbonisation or carbon wrapping work on the fire-affected girders to further strengthen the bridge and prevent corrosion," said an official.

As per plans, the work needs to be completed within one month from the date of commencement. An estimate of Rs 77.7 lakh has been fixed for the job. A devastating fire broke out at the slum situated below the bridge last Dec, badly affecting a few spans.

As for Jibanananda Setu, the authorities have planned to appoint an agency that will conduct emergency repair and maintenance work on the bridge throughout the year as and when required.

Officials said that keeping an agency ready on standby for any repair work makes things easier in emergency matters.

"Urgent work requires immediate measures at the earliest. It takes time to go through the tendering process and select an agency. Keeping an agency ready helps in taking up the job on an urgent basis," said an official.
