Kolkata: A newborn girl, wrapped in a cloth, was found abandoned in a mango orchard at the Dhanyakuria Zamindar House in Basirhat, North 24 Parganas, on Sunday morning.
The infant, whose body had multiple marks and bruises, is undergoing treatment at the Basirhat District Hospital after being rescued by cops from Malda police station.
The infant was first discovered by morning walkers, who alerted the police. Sources said locals rushed to the spot suspecting something unusual upon hearing a stray dog barking in the orchard since morning.
"It was the dog's barking that drew attention to the bundle of cloth having the baby wrapped in it," a senior police officer of the Basirhat District Police said.
The police had initially rushed the infant to Dhanyakuria Rural Hospital, from where she was shifted to the district hospital. "We have started an investigation and are making inquiries in the surrounding areas," the police official added.
