  • Kolkata: A 65-year-old construction businessman and cancer patient from Phoolbagan, Jayanta Saha, shot himself dead with his licensed firearm on the rooftop of his home on CIT Road on Saturday evening. Before taking the extreme step, he self-recorded a video on his cellphone declaring that no one else was responsible for his death.

Cops said Saha was depressed after losing his wife to cancer in March. Family members discovered his body late on Saturday after he wasn't spotted in his room.

"It seems personal grief and illness drove him to the extreme step. However, we have started a case of unnatural death and have sent the body for post-mortem examination," said a senior officer of Kolkata police.

Saha, who was diagnosed with cancer last Sep, lived in a four-storeyed building with his two sons, daughters-in-law, and their children. He was on chemotherapy.

Family members told cops that on Saturday afternoon, his two sons and elder daughter-in-law went to New Town for a construction site visit. Saha allegedly told his younger son's wife and two house helps — Khuku and Banshi — that he would eat later. "When he didn't come out of his room for a long time, all started searching for him. Banshi found him on the rooftop, lying in a pool of blood," cops said.
