  • Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court, after taking suo motu cognisance of the ruckus by protesters — work education and physical education candidates in the 2016 SSC panel — in front of the chambers of high court lawyers at 6 Old Post Office Street, constituted a three-judge bench to hear the matter.

The high court issued a notice on Tuesday naming Justice Arijit Banerjee, Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj as members of the special bench.

The high court initiative came a day after a host of lawyers appeared before the division bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Chaitali Chatterjee (Das) on Monday. They submitted to the bench that they felt "scared" over the affront on the independence of the Bar and the bench.

Lawyers pointed out that some of the agitators were found stamping their feet on the photographs of Justice Basu and hurling abuses at the lawyers.

"It is an onslaught on the independence of the judiciary. The bench and the Bar are being targeted," a senior lawyer said, recalling the ruckus in front of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha's house.

Lawyers also pointed out that police deployed in the high court premises, a place under prohibition orders, stood as "mute spectators" during the ruckus on Friday.
